The author of this books says that, as a child the used to imagine the filoxera as a frightening shape that went through the vineyards and attacked the vines with big claws, taking their life and destroying the world of his ancestors.
So strong was the evilness that he had heard telling-from his uncles and grandparents, who still knew and suffered the most difficult years of the destruction and reconstruction of the vines -that this nightmare image went with him through the years. Because of this, among other things, his tale about the valencians fight against this insect and the illness that it produces in the vines, has the emotive and appreciative bond of his ancestors.
But his history starts many decades before of that, with the epic launching of the vines in our country. ¿How many times, as we were walking through the mountains, we have wondered who-an how-would go to those parcels, today lost and non cultivated, in regions highly perched near the mountain cliffs, where today we found, at most, a carob tree or the olives trees that have taken root near the side?
Joan C. Martin reveals to us how the unusual impulse of the wine business made the farmers conquer the most inhospitable places when the filoxera left destroyed the closer vineyards, like in French and Catalonia.
From this scene, the book goes beyond the simple information transmission about an epoch, or one episode of this period. The title should not confound us. It’s not only a strictly technical and descriptive work about the processes, but a remembrance of an historical culture from a collective point of view, where are reflected persons and characters, jobs, ”sagas”,affinities and solidarities, in a common fight against the fearful filoxera, vine’s root sucking , who destroyed 2000 years of vine crop.
This book graciously combine the narration with the facts showed, describes with realism the working processes, but with the narrative creativity of the chronicler to make the tale closer, and makes the author’s passion about the subject catch the lector interest.
The reflexive narration about the author’s own experience, remembered with generosity and lucidity give us the richness of the “I was there”: listening; not from an asseverative prose or from an innocent literature, but form the value of the direct information instead the stereotype of the neutral objectivity.
We should celebrate – with cups and all -the publication of a work like this one presented by Joan C. Martin, oenologist and writer notoriously awarded, but most of all, recognized expert in the wine culture, who has been able to show in this book, with a detailed etnological view, a whole universe of relations around the wine. Putting the focus of this book in the everyday life, the author carries us to a whole world of values, traditions, conceptions, institutions and work processes that will determine a concrete period of our history. Even brings up the women’s contribution to this enormous task of launching again the crop . A very relevant contribution, that usually gets unvalued.
Thankfully this book will remain as a testimony and tribute of so many persons and years of effort, fight and wit against the adversity. It has been an honor to know first handed the original of this book that fills an emptiness for those of us who love the essential and mediterranian, physical and human, of the wine’s world, and to those who not have known first person the rightness of their hard work, but the benefits of their taste and the social unions that produces.

Diu l’autor d’aquest llibre que de menut s’imaginava la fil•loxera com una figura aterridora que recorria les vinyes i atacava els ceps amb unes grans urpes tentaculars, arrancant-los la vida i arruïnant el món dels seus avantpassats. Tanta era la malesa que havia sentit contar, als seus oncles -avis, els quals encara van conèixer, i patir, els anys més difícils de destrucció i reconstitució de les vinyes, que aquella imatge de malson el va acompanyar durant anys. Per això, i altres coses, el seu relat de la lluita dels valencians contra aquest insecte i la malaltia que produeix en els ceps, té la vinculació emotiva i de reconeixença envers els seus ancestres.
Però la seua història comença prou dècades abans que tot això, amb l’èpic rellançament de la vinya al nostre país. ¿Quantes vegades, en anar per la muntanya, ens hem preguntat qui — i com — aniria a aquells bancals més alts, hui perduts i incultes, en paratges tan encaramitats vora els cingles de muntanya on ara trobem, en tot cas, algun sofert garrofer o els ullastres arrelats vora el marge?
Joan C. Martin, ens revela com l’impuls inusitat del comerç del vi va portar el llaurador a conquerir els costers més inhòspits, quan la fil•loxera deixava devastats els ceps dels territoris del voltant com França i Catalunya.
A partir d’aquest escenari, el llibre desborda la mera transmissió d’informacions sobre una època, o un episodi d’eixa època. El títol no ens ha de portar a l’engany. No es tracta, solament, d’un treball purament tècnic i descriptiu de processos. Ans al contrari, rememora una cultura històrica, mirada des d’allò col•lectiu, on es reflecteixen persones i personatges, nissagues, treballs, afinitats i solidaritats, en una lluita comuna front a la temuda fil•loxera, xucladora de l’arrel dels ceps, que va destruir dos mil anys de conreu de vinya.
Aquest llibre combina hàbilment la narració amb la mostra de dades, descriu amb realisme, els processos de treball, però, amb la creativitat narrativa indispensable del cronista per a fer el relat més proper, i fa que la passió de l’autor pel tema tractat, encomane l’ interés del lector.
La narració reflexiva sobre la pròpia experiència de l’autor, rememorada amb lucidesa i generositat ens aporta la riquesa del «jo vaig estar allí»: escoltant; no des d’una prosa asseverativa o des d’una innocència literària, sinó des del valor de la informació directa front a l’estereotip de la neutralitat objectiva.
S’ha de celebrar ?amb copa i tot, és clar— la publicació d’un treball com el que ací ens presenta Joan C. Martin, enòleg i escriptor nombrosament guardonat, però sobretot, expert reconegut en la cultura del vi, que ha estat capaç de mostrar en aquest llibre, amb una acurada mirada etnològica, tot un univers de relacions al voltant de vi. Enfocant les formes de la vida quotidiana, l’autor ens endinsa en tot un món de valors, costums, concepcions, institucions i processos de treball que definirien una època concreta de la nostra història i, fins i tot, visibilitza l’aportació de les dones en aquesta empresa titànica de redreçar el conreu. Aportació rellevant que massa sovint ha estat desconsiderada.
Per sort aquest llibre quedarà com a testimoni i homenatge de tantes persones i tants anys d’esforç, de lluita i enginy perseverant contra l’adversitat. Ha estat un honor conéixer de primera mà el mecanoscrit original d’aquest llibre que ompli un buit per a aquells que ens estimem el paisatge essencial i mediterrani, físic i humà, del món del vi, i per als qui no hem conegut en primera persona els rigors de la seua dura feinada —ni segurament la compensació de l’acostament a la terra—, però sí els beneficis del seu tast i els lligams socials que produeix.
